Lisa Hartz, Co-director and Board President

Lisa guides a recurring writing workshop at the Norfolk City Jail. She holds Masters degrees from Hollins University(M.A., English Writing) and the University of Miami (M.F.A., Creative Writing). She has lead writing workshops and taught classes in writing for over ten years. Lisa is a founder and former director of The Muse Writers Center in Norfolk, where she developed the curriculum and designed the workshops. She also teaches community writing workshops at The Beazley Senior Center and The Portsmouth Art & Cultural Center. Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in a variety of literary magazines. She lives in Portsmouth with her husband and four boys.

Rachel Thompson, Treasurer and Project Director

Kelly Sokol Avery, Advisory Board

Kelly Sokol Avery’s work has been published in print journals and online including ConnotationPress, The Quotable, and The Pitkin Review. She received an MFA-Creative Writing with a concentration in fiction from Goddard College. She teaches creative writing at The Muse Writers Center in Norfolk, VA, is a frequent contributor to Tidewater Women, and has served as a guest editor of The Quotable.

Linda Carol Cobb, Advisory Board

Linda Carol Cobb, a retired high school teacher with an M.A. in communications, taught journalism, advanced composition and public speaking among other English electives.  She has taught sessions for Eastern Virginia Medical School, Evenings at Saint Patrick, Hampton Roads Writers, Columbia Scholastic Press Association and Virginia High School League, as well as seminars for The Muse Writing Center and Old Dominion University’s Career Switcher Program.  Linda is a free-lance copyeditor and public speaking coach.

Lauren Hurston, Advisory Board

Janine Latus, Advisory Board

Janine Latus is the author of the international bestseller If I Am Missing or Dead: a sister’s story of love, murder and liberation. She has been a freelance nonfiction writer for 30 years, with credits in O, Parents, Fitness, More, Woman’s Day and dozens of other publications. She holds a masters degree in journalism from the University of Missouri and has taught there and at other universities, and at The Muse Writing Center in Norfolk. She also is a well known speaker on sexual assault and the spectrum of intimate partner violence.
